How To Clean Air Conditioning Unit

1. Turn Off Power Running to Your AC
Air conditioners are composed of moving parts, some of which are independently running from other systems. Even if you switch off the power button on your AC unit, you’ll find that some parts of it are still moving. Avoid injuring yourself from a moving fan blade or other sharp metal parts by turning off the power directly from your circuit breaker box.
2. Remove the AC Unit Covering
Your unit will most likely have a door or grille that covers the evaporator coil. This is also sometimes fastened by foil duct tape. Remove the tape. If there are any bolts or screws holding the door in place, grab a screwdriver and loosen them off.
3. Rinse the Evaporator Coils
Dust and dirt particles often encase the evaporator coil over time. Take a soft brush and gently sweep the debris off the coil. In addition to dirt, skin cells and pollen may accumulate in your evaporator coil. If you’re allergic to either particulate, be sure to wear a mask to avoid unwanted allergic reactions.
4. Remove Debris From the Bottom of the AC Unit
Depending on which AC model you have, there will be varying types and amounts of debris that get stuck inside the bottom of your AC unit. Wear gloves and try to scoop up the large debris pieces by hand. You can also use a vacuum cleaner to reach debris that’s lodged further in.
