Furnaces Noises and What They’re Telling You
Furnaces commonly make some noise, such as humming sounds while running. Some noises, however, can indicate that the furnace has a problem and needs to be checked out by an HVAC technician. These are some common noises a furnace may make and what the problem likely is.
Rattling
A rattling noise can mean several things. The furnace might have a loose part that needs to be tightened back into position. The part might also be worn down and need to be replaced. More rarely, it could mean your furnace is about to fail. In the worst-case scenario, a rattling sound means the heat exchange has cracked, which is a major safety hazard.
Booming
If your furnace is making a booming noise when it turns on, the problem is likely a delayed ignition issue. Your thermostat calls for the furnace to turn on, and then the gas valves open and gas enters the ignition chamber. However, when the ignition is delayed, the gas builds up before the burners ignite. This results in all the gas exploding at once when the burners do ignite, leading to a booming noise.

Squealing
A squealing noise can be heard from your furnace because of a few issues. The belt might be faulty or worn, and it will need to be realigned or replaced. Squealing could also mean a motor bearing in the blower is faulty.
